Solon Community Food Pantry announces Emergency Assistance Program

SOLON– Many in the Solon community are experiencing food insecurity and financial shortfalls, and the Solon Community Food Pantry is trying to address the emergency financial concerns of residents.
Pantry staff contacted Becci Reedus, executive director of CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank in Iowa City, for information and guidance. Reedus and crisis center staff helped local organizers establish the Solon Community Pantry in 2012.
According to local volunteer Sandy Hanson, Reedus suggested the Solon food pantry set up a separate fund, apart from the one used for food donations, to allow donors to designate their monetary contributions specifically for emergency financial assistance. These monies could then be spent on rent, utilities or other family financial needs.
Legitimate assistance requests would require documented proof of need, Hanson noted. No personal checks would be written to requestors, but checks would be issued directly to a utility company, mortgage holder or landlord, she said. Requests for financial help will be considered on an individual basis, and limits on monetary amounts and frequency of requests will be established.
“Some of you will soon be writing your holiday-giving checks for various non-profits and favorite charities,” Hanson said in announcing the fund. “The Solon Community Food Pantry is asking our community to consider a financial assistance gift for our families in need.”
In order to start the program, she added, parameters of assistance need to be identified soon. “While this pandemic continues with no help from a congressional relief bill, and unemployment funds also running out, our families will continue to be impacted,” Hanson said. “This is an extraordinary time, not seen since the 1930s.”
The Solon Community Food Pantry serves families each Monday from 2 to 6 p.m. with drive-up pick-up of a wide selection of food items.
