Solon public library

Top children’s picture books

In November the editors of School Library Journal picked their top children’s picture books of 2013. Below is the list of titles, for 2013, that we have available at the Solon Public Library.
• “Steam Train, Dream Train” by Sherri Duskey Rinker. In this book with rhyming text, the dream train pulls into the station and all the different cars are loaded by the animal workers, each with the appropriate cargo.
• “The Dark” by Lemony Snicket. Laszlo is afraid of the dark which lives in the same big, creaky house as him, until one night the dark pays him a visit.
• “Mr. Tiger Goes Wild” by Peter Brown. Bored with city life and the proper behavior it requires, Mr. Tiger has a wild idea that leads him to discover his true nature.
• “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt. When Duncan arrives at school one morning, he finds a stack of letters, one from each of his crayons, complaining about how he uses them.
• “Penny and Her Marble” by Kevin Henkes. Penny feels guilty after taking a beautiful blue marble that she sees in Mrs. Goodwin’s grass, but gets a pleasant surprise when she goes to return it the next day.

Friends of the Library book sale

It is almost time again for the semi-annual used book sale sponsored by the Friends of the Solon Library. Member volunteers are busy sorting and boxing thousands of books for the sale on Saturday, Feb. 1. We estimate that we will have over 3,600 used books, DVDs, CDs, and audio books available. Most items are priced under 50¢. Sale hours will be 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., with Friends members allowed to enter at 9 a.m. If you’re not a friends member, and want to start your shopping early, there will be a $5 early admission fee. Bring your boxes and bags and get bargains galore to help pass the winter months.
Added note: Kris would like to challenge all of you to let us know what 25 cent purchase might top the one she found last year. Kris bought a book of bran muffin recipes for 25 cents and has used it every week, all year. “I’ve tried every recipe and our favorite is the peanut butter bran muffins (which I would be happy to share).” What a great bargain for 25 cents. Can you top that one?

Early-out activities

On school early-out days, the library offers free programming for school-aged children. On Thursday, Jan. 23, will be a craft made with playing cards called “Card Creatures.” Program starts at 1 p.m. and pick up time is 2 p.m.

January Storytime
Storytime is every Tuesday for children ages 2 through 5 with a program of stories, songs and rhymes followed by a craft. Younger siblings are also welcome to attend. The theme for Jan. 21 will be “The Letter C.”

Teen Movie Night

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is hosting a Teen Movie Night on Saturday, Jan. 18, for seventh through 12th grades. The first movie, “Footloose” (2011), will start at 6 p.m. Pizza slices will be sold at intermission followed by another movie, “Secondhand Lions,” which will be done by 10 p.m.

Need a unique Valentine gift?

The Solon Library Foundation is having a raffle in the month of February. The grand prize is a $200 gift card to Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. The resort features rides, slides and adventures; an incredible time for the whole family. Other prizes include several baskets: the hometown dessert basket features items from Savvy, the Dairy Queen, and E’s Florals; Family fun day includes tickets to the Children’s Museum in Coralville; the science bucket includes tickets to the Science Center in Cedar Rapids; Read and getaway basket includes hotel and dining vouchers at Riverside Casino; and the date night basket includes certificates from Mendoza and the theater on 5th St. in Coralville. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20 and can be purchased at the library or from any foundation member beginning Feb. 1. Prize baskets will be on display, the last two weeks of January, in the new display case.

‘Foods for Fines’

The Solon Public Library will forgive your outstanding fine with a donation of one nonperishable food item for every $1 in fines. Food for Fines will run from Jan. 15 through 31, and all donated food will go to the Solon food pantry. The pantry requests donations of canned meat, canned soup (not tomato), canned fruit, and canned vegetables (not corn or green beans) and peanut butter. Please, no expired items. The Food for Fines program does not apply to lost materials or fines above $20.

Plans for new display window– passionate movie fan alert

“Peter and the Wolf” will remain our display through Jan. 18. Our next window, “Hollywood & Vine,” will celebrate movies and the Oscars, and begins in early February. Marilyn Monroe has accepted our invitation, and John Wayne said, “hope to see you there, pilgrim.” We are looking for movie memorabilia for the display– old magazines, posters, photos, projectors– anything that takes us to Hollywood in the 1950s or earlier. Please call the library or Toni at 319-644-2777.
