Spartans fall to No. 8 Central DeWitt
SOLON– The Spartans ran into trouble against No. 8 Central DeWitt last week on the road.
Although Solon was in control for a good portion of the game, a late penalty in the box gave Central DeWitt’s Keegan Lass a free shot which he converted to break a 1-1 tie.
“We played well being short handed due to the conference track meet and against a good and ranked opponent,” said head coach Jeremy McMurrin of the 2-1 loss. “We worked hard to get the lead and deserved to get the win. Unfortunately we were unable to do that due to things we didn’t have any control over after we took the lead.”
Shay Croy scored the Spartans’ goal on an assist from Spencer Lawson. Goalie Nick Melchert had 12 saves.
“It’s unfortunate for the team, which worked extremely hard for that win,” McMurrin noted.
The Spartans sandwiched the loss with two home wins, against Maquoketa May 6 and over Williamsburg May 13.
A pair of brothers– Spencer and Zach Lawson– each scored against Maquoketa, while Adam Nelson-Ockenfels added a pair of goals in the 4-0 win. Croy and Tyler Shaffer were credited with assists, while Melchert added four saves.
Solon blew past Williamsburg Monday, 3-0, increasing its record to 9-7 on the year.
The Spartans’ last two losses have come against ranked opponents, and No. 12 Clear Creek Amana comes to town Friday. Solon hosts Washington Monday, May 19, and closes out the regular season Tuesday, May 20, on the road at Vinton-Shellsburg.
