Spartans lose heartbreaker to CR Jeff

DAVENPORT– It was another week of hard lessons for the Solon varsity baseball team.
The Spartans went 2-4 over the last seven days on the road, sweeping a doubleheader from Vinton-Shellsburg, but losing a heartbreaker in extra innings to Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
The good news is that the offense has been coming to life– Solon scored fewer than five runs in only one of the games and scored in double-digits twice.
But wins have continued to be a premium.
Solon allowed 32 runs while losing a doubleheader to West Delaware Monday, June 18. After taking an early lead, the Spartans fell behind in the first game but put up five runs in the fifth to tie the game at 7-7. West Delaware, however, put up its second seven-run inning in the fifth to take control in a 15-7 loss for Solon. The Spartans threw four different pitchers during the game, with Jared Lester taking the loss. Colton Dall hit a solo home run, and the Spartans had four doubles for the game.
In the second game, West Delaware marched out to a 13-2 lead after four innings, but Solon battled back with an eight-run sixth inning and came close with four more in the seventh before falling, 17-16.
Tim Lance allowed 13 hits, striking out six and allowing only six earned runs. Connor Fitzpatrick pitched two innings of relief.
Todd Oberthien was 3-6 at the plate with two doubles and four RBI. The Spartans as a team drew 11 walks.
Another late Solon rally and another close loss came Wednesday, June 20, when the Spartans took a short road trip to visit Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
Solon scored five unanswered runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, but could do no more and the teams were at a standstill until the 10th inning when Jefferson pulled out a 10-9 win.
Austin Dall was 3-6 at the plate with a double. Chris McNutt and Elijah Kane were each 3-5 with two RBI.
Nathan Hawkins allowed only five hits and three earned runs in seven innings on the mound, but gave up nine walks. Colton Dall pitched the extra innings, taking the loss.
The Spartans followed the heartbreaker with two wins at Vinton, 5-4 and 16-12, Thursday night.
Elijah Kane hit a solo home run in the first game, while Oberthien struck out eight in a complete game for the win.
A host of pitchers threw in the nightcap, with Lester getting the win after Solon scored nine runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-10 lead. Tommy Hamiel and McNutt had doubles. Hamiel was 3-3 at the plate and had four RBI.
The Spartans fell to Davenport Assumption, 8-2, Friday night.
