Start date, end date an issue again

SOLON– Remember last year when the Solon school board was split over the start date for school?
Are you ready for round two?
At Monday night’s school board meeting, the start and end dates for the 2014-15 school year were discussed, but this time, an informal poll showed board members leaning the other way.
Last year, board president Dave Asprey broke a 2-2 tie, going against the recommendation of the district’s calendar committee and siding with board members in favor of a later start date for school.
Those in favor of pushing the start date back would like to see the semester break aligned with the winter holiday, while those opposed to pushing the date back feel it will impact family time as well as activities that are usually scheduled in the weeks leading up to the start of classes.
“We spent a lot of time last year focused on the start date,” board member Dean Martin said Monday night after high school principal Nathan Wear presented a preliminary calendar report for the 2014-15 school year. “That decision being made just a year ago, I don’t want to open up that can of worms again,” Martin said.
But the other board members– Dan Coons, Dick Schwab, Tim Brown and Rick Jedlicka– all indicated they would lean toward an earlier start time.
