SUMC Men’s Group hosts soup supper to benefit Habitat house
SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Men’s group will be serving the community in more ways than one this month.
The group’s annual soup supper has always been a fundraiser to benefit the church, but this year, proceeds will be collected as free will donations rather than through ticket sales, and donated to the Habitat for Humanity project currently underway in Solon.
The men and other church volunteers will host the supper on Friday, Feb. 17, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church, 122 N. West St. The menu includes homemade oyster stew, chicken noodle soup or chili, hot dogs, pie and beverages. Live entertainment by Shima’s Country Sounds. Free will offerings will be accepted and donated to the Habitat project. The entire community is encouraged to come out to enjoy a great homemade meal and support the Habitat for Humanity effort.
Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity is planning to build a house in Solon this summer, a single-family home on a vacant lot on South Dubuque Street for partnering family Kurt and Vicki Shover of Solon. A community-wide committee has been meeting for the last six weeks to determine ways to raise the required $35,000 in cash and in-kind contributions for the project. The committee typically meets on Sunday evenings at 6:30 at the Solon United Methodist Church, with its next meeting planned for Feb. 19.
