Swisher American Legion Auxiliary sending three girls to Girls State at Drake University

SWISHER– Three girls from Prairie High School will be attending Girls State for a week in June at Drake University in Des Moines. The program is being held on the campus at Drake for the second year where the girls will interact with others from across the state of Iowa. There are usually about 300 girls that attend from across the state of Iowa at Girls State. As “citizens,” they study local, state and national government processes by setting up their own governments and administering them according to the laws of their particular state.
Attendees will divide into two political parties and create their own way of running and campaigning for public offices. They will participate in party rallies, elections, town meetings and legislative sessions. This program develops leadership and pride in American citizenship, provides education about our system of government, instills a greater understanding of American traditions and stimulates a desire to maintain our democratic processes within our republic. Swisher American Legion Auxiliary members are excited to provide this opportunity to select junior girls from the school district.
