A tough couple of days for Clippers baseball

TIFFIN– Even the scoreboard couldn’t believe the numbers.
The old metal box flickered, flashed like disco lights and even shut itself off at times while the numbers upon it went almost unbelievably higher, rivaling a football score. After two hours, the carnage was over, and the Sailors of Waterloo Columbus had put up 27 runs to Clear Creek Amana’s two in the first half of a varsity baseball doubleheader Thursday.
The Sailors put up eight runs in the first inning, loading up the bases twice. Andrew Davis’ Clippers got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning as Dillon Villhauer and Tanner Bandy scored, but it would be the only CCA runs of the game.
Columbus put up five more runs in the second, unleashed a devastating 12-run blitz in the third and capped the game with two runs in the fourth and final inning. Villhauer and Bandy had one hit apiece as did Mitch Stopko. Zach Anderson and Cody Wagner each picked up RBIs.
Nile Rourke, Jacob Klingeman and Bandy shared the mound, each working one and one-third innings. Rourke was charged with the loss, and gave up eight hits and 13 runs (10 earned). Rourke struck out one and walked four. Klingeman gave up six hits and 11 runs (eight earned), struck-out one and walked three. Bandy had five hits get away from him along with three runs (two earned), and walked one Sailor.
For CCA: 2 runs, 3 hits, 6 errors.
For Waterloo Columbus: 27 runs, 19 hits, 4 errors.
After a 20-minute re-fit, the Clippers came back out for the nightcap. The Sailors wasted little time, opening with two runs in the first. The Clippers answered with one in their half. The Sailors added one in the second, CCA tied with two more. Three more runs went to the Sailors in the third, but the Clippers only got one. From there the game belonged to the Sailors with one in the fourth, five in the fifth and three in the sixth to one final Clipper run in the fifth for a 15-5 final score.
Ben Gingerich led at the plate with three hits, two RBIs and one run scored while A.J. Liddell and Bandy had two hits each. Liddell scored once and drove in an RBI. Anderson, Wagner and Rourke all had one hit apiece with a run for Rourke. Aaron Campbell and Nick Kasenberg scored a run each. Anderson took the loss after four innings of work, striking-out four, walking six, giving up five hits and seven runs (five earned). Wagner relieved Anderson for the final two innings, striking-out one, walking two and allowing seven hits with eight runs (seven earned).
For CCA: 5 runs, 10 hits, 3 errors.
For Waterloo Columbus: 15 runs, 12 hits, 2 errors.
The losses came after a tough road trip Tuesday night to Mount Vernon. The Mustangs trampled the Clippers 19-9 in the opener and 16-8 in the nightcap. After the four games, the Clippers dropped to 5-13 overall, 3-13 in the WaMaC at the half-way point of the regular season. CCA will host Central DeWitt in a varsity double-header Thursday, June 21, at 5:30 p.m. and travel to Vinton for two games on June 25.
