IOWA CITY– They’re heading back to the state baseball championships again.
Iowa City West High’s Trojans are the No. 2 seed in the eight-team field in Class 4A for the 2016 tournament to be held in Des Moines on Wednesday, July 27, Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30. The Trojans make their third consecutive appearance after knocking off Davenport Central, 7-1, in the Substate 5 final on Wednesday, July 20, at West High.
The Blue Devils had reason to celebrate early as an RBI double, ripped to left center field, gave them a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. It would be their only run of the night.
West responded during the bottom half of the inning as Dane Randall scored on a Connor McCaffery double to left field to tie the game. Freshman Jason Strunk knocked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning on the heels of a double by Spencer “Spuds” Wiskus. Strunk brought Wiskus home with the dinger to put West up, 3-1. Tanner Lohaus and Randall both capitalized on a Blue Devil error giving the Trojans a four-run inning and a 5-1 lead.
Central changed pitchers in the bottom of the sixth and the unlucky fellow found himself giving up a pair of hits as Nate Disterhoft singled, Lohaus made a sacrifice bunt, Randall walked and Logan Sims popped out to second base. However, it was an RBI double by Izaya Ono-Fullard that gave the new man the most heartburn, and Disterhoft and Randall scored to put West up, 7-1.
The Blue Devils ended the season at 25-11 overall, while the Trojans improved to 33-6 with their ninth consecutive win. The previous win streak for West was seven back in June.
Austin Miller went the distance for the Trojans, giving up only two hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out 10. West’s eight hits came from Ono-Fullard (2), Strunk (2), Disterhoft (2), McCaffery and Wiskus.
The Trojans faced No. 7 Cedar Rapids Jefferson (28-11) on Wednesday, July 27, in the quarterfinal round of the state baseball tournament.
