Varsity, reserves have their way with Regals
IOWA CITY– The West High varsity reserve team shelled Iowa City Regina 14-2 Tuesday, June 17, setting the stage for a 4-1 varsity win at Regina.
In the reserves’ game, the Regals put two across home plate in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead. The game stagnated until the top of the sixth when the Trojans’ bats came to life with a 14-run barrage, led-off by Shane Sturtz’ two-RBI double. Spencer Shelton, John Collentine, Nick Spiess, Jacob Verry and Mitch Boxwell all drove in runs during the onslaught.
In the varsity contest, a sacrifice by Tyus Adkins scored courtesy runner Verry in the top of the fourth inning for a 1-0 lead. Brock Hatzky knocked a two-run homer later in the inning to make it 3-0. The Regals scored in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single before Collins Marine stepped in to relieve starting pitcher Spiess. An RBI hit from Devin Raffensperger in the top of the seventh inning handed the Trojans the 4-1 win.
DeLaney, Joe Scott, Declan Doyle, Raffensperger, Nate Boland and Hatzky all had hits with Doyle and Raffensperger credited with doubles and the homer for Hatzky.
Spiess was credited with the win with 4-1/3 innings pitching. Spiess gave up five hits, one earned run, walked three and struck out three. Collins Marine worked 1-2/3 innings of relief walking one and striking out two. Nick Gallagher finished West’s night with one inning striking out two Regals.
West improved to 11-7 overall. Cedar Rapids Jefferson travels to the West High diamond on Friday, June 27, for a varsity doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.
