West Boys loaded up for track season
IOWA CITY– Experience at the state meet and Drake Relays factors heavily into the 2013 Iowa City West Boys’ Track and Field Team. Coach Brian Martz returns a powerhouse of talent to his line-up with eight seniors and four juniors back with state meet performances on their resume.
Tavian Smith (senior) will run sprints and the long jump this year. At the state meet, Smith was on the Champion 4x200-meter relay, the 2nd place 1600-meter medley relay, 3rd-place 4x100-meter relay and was 6th in the long jump. Bailey Wetherell (senior) is a mid-distance man who was with Smith on the 1600-meter medley, was on the 5th-place 4x800-meter relay and took 7th at the state meet in the 800-meter run. Isaac Jensen (senior) is a distance runner was sixth in the state meet in the 3200-meter run and 5th at the state cross country meet. In addition, Jensen set the school 5k record last fall.
Matt Feeley (senior) specializes in sprint events and the low hurdles, and ran the 400-meter low hurdles at state. Ahmed Noureldaim (senior) is a sprinter who was on the state meet 4x400-meter relay team. Royce Peterson (senior) is also a sprinter from the state meet 4x400. Jeremy Morgan (senior) trades in his basketball shoes for track spikes as a high jump and sprint man. Morgan competed in the high jump at the state meet. Dondre Alexander (senior) hopes to leave a troubled basketball season in his past as he again goes out for high jump and throws with the Trojan track squad. Alexander also competed in the high jump at state.
Andrew Gilbaugh (junior) is back for sprints and the high hurdles. Gilbaugh was on the state meet 2nd-place sprint medley relay squad as well as the 2nd-place shuttle hurdle relay. Kaleb Greiner (junior) is a mid-distance man with experience on the state 5th-place 4x800-meter relay and the state 800-meter run. Cole Hatzky (junior) is another mid-distance runner who was also on the state 4x800 crew. Daniel Gardarsson (junior) is a distance man who ran in the state 3200 and 1600-meter events.
Seniors Ezra Reiners, Mohamadou Bouare and Reid Bonner will handle sprint events; juniors Elliot Young and Wynton Karanja are back as well. Young is a two-time MVC champ in the shuttle hurdle relays while Karanja was on the school record holding indoor 4x800-meter relay team. Jacob Sanderson, a sophomore, will take on sprint events while Patrick Karanja, a freshman, will go for mid-distance runs. The younger Karanja earned “fastest freshman 5k” honors last fall.
Coach Martz sees the Trojans (defending MVC Champions), rival City High and Dubuque Senior as the best odds for the conference championship with West Des Moines Dowling, West and Linn-Mar as the leading contenders for the state title. Neil Davis, Travis Craig, Maureen Head, Jim Walden and Tyler Meade will assist Martz.
