TIFFIN— There’s a new sheriff in town. Jared Carder has taken over as Coach of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity wrestling program. This marks the third coach in as many seasons for the program which sent two to State last season: Tyler Walls (189 pounds) and Tyler Grauer (215 pounds). Walls came home with a seventh place finish, Grauer placed eighth.
This season, only two seniors return to the line-up: Dalton Beckler (138/145 pounds) and Casey Rohret (182/195 pounds). A quartet of sophomores rounds out the balance of the returning starters, Carter Carew (120 pounds), Colton Beckler (113 pounds), Nate Langrehr (126 pounds) and Tyler Kasper (138 pounds). Sophomores Sam Andrews (152 pounds), Auston Spahn (145 pounds) and Jimmy Kohler (195 pounds) are also back in the Clipper fleet for 2011-2012.
Senior Jesse Jones joins the squad at 170 pounds along with junior Beau Gerard at 220. Sophomores Nick Walker (138 pounds) and David Calderon (126 pounds) are new this season as well. Ten freshmen are expected to see time on the mats.
“The WaMaC conference is a tough wrestling conference that is typically well represented at the state tournament. The teams to beat will be Independence, West Delaware and Williamsburg,” said Carder. However, the Clippers will make their presence known. “Our strength will be our conditioning this year, and the bulk of our experience is in our lower half of the weights,” the coach said. But on the flip side, “Our team is very young with 80 percent of the kids on our roster being a freshman or sophomore, but we will continue to work hard and improve.”
