SOLON– The No. 3 Benton Community Bobcats visited Solon for the Lady Spartans home opener Friday night. The Bobcats scored the first points and continued to lead the entire game, beating Solon 59-43.
Solon trailed by just seven at the half, but Benton kept the pressure on and by the start of the fourth quarter, the Bobcats led by 12.
The visitors nailed six 3-pointers for the night and played a disruptive defense.
Solon moved to 1-2 on the season with the loss. Benton Community went to 3-0.
The Lady Spartans were led in scoring by Emma Rickels and Shelby Gunnells, each with 8 points. Rylee Smith and Karly Kramer had 7 points, while Kristen Purdy added 6.
Kramer had seven rebounds to pace the Lady Spartans.
Rickels and Smith each had three steals.
The Lady Spartans started the season with a loss to Williamsburg Nov. 20, but followed it last week with a win against Waterloo Columbus, 57-43.
In that game, Gunnells led the team with 12 points, going 6-9 from the field. Kramer added 11 points on 5-9 shooting. Rylee Smith had nine steals.
Over the weekend, the Solon girls picked up another win, this one on the road at Washington, 56-48.
Rylee Smith led the scoring with 18 points, going 10-14 from the free throw line. The two teams were knotted at 25-25 at the half, and Solon trailed by two points before taking control in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Spartans went to the charity stripe 39 times against Washington, connecting on 23 attempts.
