Fifth Vocal Concert
The fifth graders at Solon Middle School are pleased to announce their vocal music performance on Wednesday, January 23, at 7 p.m. in the middle school auditorium. We will show case our singing voices, our dancing abilities, and even a something you probably won’t see anywhere else, a gong orchestra and shadow puppet show! Come join us for the fun!
State Vocal Jazz Festival
Best wishes to the Solon High School Vocal Jazz Ensembles as they compete at State Contest Saturday, January 26. The two ensembles “Blame It On Our Youth” and “5th Street Jazz” will perform in front of a panel of three judges for contest ratings. Then, recordings of these performances are sent for consideration for the State Jazz Championships. These ensembles are both competing for the first time at State Contest and we wish them the best!
K-6 Dance Clinic
K-6 Junior Spartans, come join the high school dance team Monday, January 28, and Wednesday, January 30, to learn a glow in the dark dance. Arrangements have been made for participants to be bussed from Lakeview to the Middle School. Practices will take place in the MS Auditorium, wrestling room and choir room. Pick up time will be 5 p.m. in the MS Auditorium Lobby. The Dance Clinic Performance will be February 1 during the half-time of the JV basketball game (approximately 6:30 p.m.). Participants will get into the game free, but family members will need to pay or use an activity ticket/family pass.
Frozen Foods Sale
Band and choir students in grades 8-12 are selling Red Wheel frozen foods and soup/dip mixes through January 30. Checks should be made out to Solon Spotlight. All profit from these sales will go directly into the student’s individual account for the next scheduled music department trip during spring break 2009. Your support is appreciated.
College for Kids
Request for Registration Forms are available for this summer’s sessions of College for Kids, sponsored by Grant Wood AEA. Founded in 1987, College for Kids offers summer enrichment programs to high-ability students who want to advance their academic abilities by taking topic specific, advanced level courses in a college setting. Students completing grades 6, 7, or 8 by summer 2008 who meet at least one of the following criteria are eligible:
+ Have been identified for/participated in a gifted program.
+ Have scored at the 90% or above (local or national norms) on a standardized achievement test. (ITBS) in one of the following areas of math, science, reading.
Students will be registered for three courses per session, with session A running from June 16-27 and session B July 15-25. Forms may be picked up from Ms. Kounkel, ELP Coordinator/Teacher. Forms must be completed and returned to Ms. Kounkel no later than Friday, February 1.
Congratulations to Courtney Holubar, Mikaela Cook, Jacob Swenson, Jaime NeuCollins, and Sam Prentice for their performances on Saturday, January 19 at Large Group District Speech contest! The students received a II rating and did Solon proud!
