Robert Francis Mulherin, 66, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax, by the Rev. Dustin Vu. A rosary service was held Friday at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, with visitation held at the church. Robert is donating his body after funeral services to the University of Iowa Deeded Body program for teaching and research.
Robert is survived by son, Gregory (Kelly) of Solon; daughter, Dr. Brenda Mulherin of Ames; two grandchildren, Jason and Alyssa of Solon; brother, Loren of Fairfax; four sisters, Elaine (Larry) Arnold and Carolyn (Jim) Roberg, both of Cedar Rapids, Marita (Darrel) Schmidt of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Marlene (Ron) Dusil of Fairfax; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents and brother, Raymond, preceded Robert in death.
Robert Francis Mulherin was born April 4, 1943, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Raymond and Bernice Sampson Mulherin. He graduated from St. Patrick Catholic High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1961. He married Terry Ludvicek on Sept. 20, 1969, in Fairfax. He was the first employee driver with GSTC, where he worked until retirement in 2007. He earned several awards as a truck driver, including over 20 years Safe Driving with two million miles accident-free and Driver of the Year award several times. Robert was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax, and the National Catholic Society of Foresters.
Robert liked the simple things in life. He loved John Deere tractors, attending drag races and playing cards. He was known for visiting and helping out elderly neighbors and friends. Robert enjoyed his time with family and his grandchildren.
