DES MOINES– The Solon Spartans baseball team beat West Des Moines Valley 7-0 after the state 1A soccer championship Saturday in Des Moines. Four soccer players came over to the game after their final to help salvage a little something from a disappointing day.
Solon’s team travelled over from Cownie Soccer Complex and basically threw their cleats on and beat the No. 7 team in Class 4A (and the state’s largest high school).
Brandon Shulista and Ryan Butler combined to throw a one-hitter, with Brandon striking out seven in four innings and Butler three in three innings. Butler also hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season.
Derrick Loveless hit a 3-run home run in the fifth inning, his first of the year.
Austin Dall and Tyler Smith also collected two hits each.
Solon Assistant CoachSteve Duncan, the retired athletic director of Valley, was honored before the game. The Valley baseball and softball complexes have been renamed Steve Duncan Athletic Complex.
