Don’t overlook this spooky debut novel because it is cataloged in the YA (Young Adult) section. “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” by Ransom Riggs has already been snapped up by Twentieth Century Fox for movie adaptation. Sixteen-year old Jacob witnessed his grandfather’s horrifying death and decided to journey to a small Welsh island to see if the stories about his growing up were actually true. Grandfather claims to have been raised in an orphanage populated by children with powers like invisibility and levitation. And, what about that box of strange photos his grandfather possessed including an image of someone with a mouth in the back of their head. Photos from the box are sprinkled throughout the book.
