David O. Smith, 58, of Swisher, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at home after a four-year battle with a metastatic kidney cancer. A visitation was held on Friday, Nov. 25, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life was held Nov 26 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home by Deb Black. Inurnment was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Prairieburg.
Survivors include his wife Carol; mother Ruth Smith of Cedar Rapids; sister Sara Smith Gates of Las Vegas; brother Bradley Smith of Robinsville, N.J.; brother-in-law Bill (Janelle) Holub; sister-in-law Marylou (Travis) Coonfare; nieces and nephews and his devoted labs, Anna and Libby.Dave was born March 21, 1953, in Cedar Rapids to Andrew and Ruth Smith. He married Carol Holub on Sept. 13, 1975, in Prairieburg. He was employed by Schneider Electric for over 30 years as a quality engineer.
Dave and Carol were course monitors for the Fifth Season 8K race for 25 years. Dave will be remembered as a loving husband, son, brother, and friend. He was an honest, kind, and gentle man who enjoyed good food and wine, and traveling with his wife in their fifth wheel. He especially enjoyed all the festivities surrounding St. Patrick’s Day with friends. Dave will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
