IOWA CITY— The West High Trojans under the leadership of Coach Mark Reiland traveled across town Thursday night, Dec. 8, to take on rival City High in a dual meet.
The JV squad opened the night with a 51-18 win while the varsity crew closed the dual 57-15.
In JV action, 182-pound Micah Kelsay pinned City’s Blake McWane in 4:42 following a forfeit to West at 170-pounds. Omar Gonzalez took a 7-1 decision from City’s Miguel Gutierrez at 106-pounds, Tristen Bowers got the fall in 3:33 over Ethan Vermace in the 126-pound match, Jake Gorvin pinned City’s Devon Duarte in 2:45 at 138-pounds, and Tyler Hebl took the 145-pound match against Damon Coghill-Behrends with a fall at 1:26. West High’s Jackson Voigt won his 160-pound bout against City’s Will Keffala-Gerhard by pinning the Little Hawk in 41 seconds.
Three Trojan reserves picked up wins as well. Hank Hugen pulled off a 25-12 major decision over City’s James Ridgeway at 120-pounds, Demitrius Solis-Martin pinned Joe Perot in 2:47 for a 138-pound match, and Omar Gonzalez overhauled Colton Chalupa in 1:05 for a 106-pound match.
Mike Watkins opened the varsity match by pinning City’s Gage Olson in 1:37 for the 170-pound match. Mickey Pelfrey got the fall in 3:08 over Ryan Maas at 195-pounds, and Jack Hathaway got the pin in a 132-pound contest in 1:28 over Evgeney Kolyvanov. Dakota Bauer earned a 24-9 technical fall over City’s Colin Donnelly in the 138-pound match-up while Sam Chalkley only needed 51 seconds to pin Tom Denneny at 145-pounds. Gradey Gambrall took a 13-3 decision away from Mitch Hasler at 152-pounds and Justin Koethe stunned City’s Harrison Whitlow with a fall in 24 seconds to close-out the dual at 160-pounds. West picked up forfeits at 113, 120, and 126-pounds.
The Trojans will defend their mats Thursday, Dec. 15, as Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Falls come to visit.
