IOWA CITY– As he looked out across the extra-wide pitch at West High, coach Brad Stiles realized something was missing.
“I was hoping for more leadership out there,” Stiles said. The Trojans improved to 3-0 in the regular season (the Trojans fell to the CR Washington Warriors in a preseason exhibition match) with a 2-1 win Tuesday, April 23, but after the match there wasn’t as much jubilation as one might expect. The Saints scored in the 29th minute of the first half and enjoyed the 1-0 lead at the break. For West, despite mounting withering attacks on the Saints’ goal, the tying shot didn’t find the net until midway through the second half.
“It took everything but the kitchen sink to get that first goal,” Stiles said of the crazed combination of attacks with the ball bouncing around like a pinball, including launching off the top rail, before Dwight Bode scored on a header. The winning goal came with eight minutes left as Paris Martins capitalized on a rebound during a dive-bomb attack.
The Trojans are home Friday, May 3, as CR Kennedy comes to visit with a 6:45 p.m. start. On Tuesday, May 7, West will face City High at the University of Iowa’s soccer field. That match is set to kick-off at 7 p.m.
