SOLON– Two of the best teams in Class 4A handed each other the first loss of the season this weekend.
Solon’s Lady Spartans, ranked No. 3, and No. 1 Dallas Center-Grimes ruined each other’s perfect seasons at the Elite Eight softball tournament in Urbandale Friday and Saturday.
Solon defeated Dallas Center 7-2 on Friday, and Dallas Center returned the favor Saturday in a 10-5 loss for the Lady Spartans.
Holly Hinkel went the distance in the win, scattering four hits in the 7-2 win. Hinkel allowed two earned runs, staking Dallas Center to a 2-0 lead through the first four innings. Hinkel settled in and Dallas Center was scoreless the rest of the way, while Solon took the lead with three runs in the fifth and broke it open with three more in the seventh.
Taylor Nearad went 3-4 with two RBI and a double, while Riley Ogden and Emma Rickels were each 2-3.
Miranda Hochstetler took the loss in Saturday’s rematch after giving up nine earned runs in an inning and two-thirds on the mound. Freshman Dakota Doyle stepped in for four innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits.
Down 9-0 after two innings, the Lady Spartans put five runs up in the fifth inning with RBIs by Ogden (2), Emma Rickels (2) and Emily Ira.
The loss moved the Lady Spartans to 20-1 on the season.
Earlier in the week, Solon cruised by West Delaware with a pair of 10-0 wins.
The Lady Spartans pounded out 10 hits in the first game and 12 hits in the second, with home runs by Nearad and Ira.
Solon also hosted Waterloo Columbus Thursday in a 3-2 win, and defeated Johnston 3-2 during the Elite Eight Tournament.
