IOWA CITY– Trojan met Trojan as West High hosted Waterloo East on the baseball diamond Friday, June 14 for a varsity doubleheader. The West boys took the double dip, 10-0 and 10-5.
West scattered runs throughout the six-inning opener with 12 hits, no errors and four men left stranded. Reid Bonner had four of the hits with three RBIs. Declan Doyle was a two-hitter, also with three RBIs while Ezra Reiners, Devin Raffensperger, Tyus Adkins, Greg Ludwig, Colin Baker and Josh Verry all had one hit apiece. Doyle had a pair of homers, Bonner put up a homer, a triple and a double in the affair as well.
Adkins pitched all six innings giving up no hits, no runs, walking one and striking out 11.
The crew from Waterloo came out reloaded for the nightcap and put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. However West High was dedicated to defending their diamond and answered with five in the bottom half of the inning. The northern Trojans tied the game with two more runs in the second, the last two they would have for the night. The home Trojans put up five more runs throughout the third, fourth and fifth innings to seal the sweep.
Brock Hatzky homered for West while Adkins and Reiners had triples. Reiners, Bonner, Raffensperger and Adkins had two hits apiece with a pair of RBIs for Reiners and Hatzky.
West coach Charlie Stumpff exercised his stable of pitchers putting Nick Gallagher on the mound for four innings and giving Collins Marine, Ludwig and Tanner Hakert one inning of work each. Gallagher gave up six hits; five earned runs, walked one and struck out eight. Marine, Ludwig and Hakert all had a pair of Ks apiece.
