SWISHER– The county’s annual Pelican Festival will be held Sunday, Sept. 8, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Hawkeye Wildlife Area near Swisher.
The day includes pelican viewing with bird experts, a children’s activity booth and a live hawk release. Staff from the Macbride Raptor Research project and others will offer informational programs on various bird species, and there will be exhibits by environmental organizations and groups including the Eastern Iowa Beekeepers Assoc., Iowa Ornithologists’ Union, Iowa Rivers Revival, Iowa Valley Resource C&D, Iowa Wildlife Federation, Iowa Young Birders, Johnson County Heritage Trust, The Songbird Project, Macbride Raptor Research, Prairie State Mushroom Club, and Swisher Fire Dept. Concessions will be provided by the Iowa City West High Trap Shooting Club. The event is hosted by the Iowa Audubon Society, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Iowa City Bird Club and the Johnson County Conservation Board.
