James H. Schnoes, 83, died Thursday, Sept. 5 at Countryview Care Center in North Liberty surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father John Spiegel officiating. Visitation was Sept. 8 in Coralville, where a Vigil Service was held. Graveside Services with Military Honors was held Sept. 10 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Adel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the James Schnoes Memorial Fund.
Jim was born April 23, 1930, in Granville, the son of Edward Adam and Katherine Schlitche Schnoes. He graduated from Holy Name High School in Marcus, where he farmed with his family. Jim was proud to serve in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 in Korea, Japan and Hawaii. On Aug. 2, 1958, Jim married Mary Oswald in Marcus.
They moved to the Iowa City area where Jim was employed at McGurk-Meyers for over 30 years. Jim and Mary have been members of St. Mary’s Church for 51 years where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. Jim was a 51-year member of American Legion Post #721. Jim and Mary had been involved with Boy Scouts. Jim loved to bowl, fish, trap shoot, garden and landscape their home, which they built in 1963. They loved to travel, especially trips to Europe and when they drove to Alaska.
Survivors include his loving wife Mary and their three children, Steve (Tonya) of Woodland Park, Colo., Mark (Diane) of Coralville and Susan (Kent) Christensen of West Des Moines; six grandchildren, Paul, Stephanie, AJ, Claire, Ashley and Matthew.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.
