IOWA CITY– The fourth-ranked in Class 5A Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs took a win away from the Iowa City West High Women of Troy Tuesday, Oct. 1, on the volleyball court. The Mustangs won 3-1 in varsity volleyball action.
West came up short 25-23 in the opening set, rallied to a 25-21 win in set two, and fell 25-21 and 25-15 to close-out the match.
Mollie Mason, a senior, led the West offense with a dozen kills and one ace in her 15-17 serving effort. Mikaela Morgan (junior) and Ali Tauchen (freshman) had seven kills each; Tauchen had a perfect 9-9 showing in serves while Morgan had an ace as she went 11-12. Laynie Whitehead, a junior, made six kills and went 10-11 in serves. Whitehead also had 26 assists and 17 digs.
Emily Halverson, a freshman, had four kills, Toni Martins and Hannah Fairfield, both seniors had three kills each, and Lizzy Klemme (senior) had one kill and made a dozen assists. Klemme was 14-15 in serves, Martins made 15-16 with a pair of aces as well.
Even with the loss, the Women of Troy made it into the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Oct. 3 rankings, earning a ninth-place berth with their 17-6 record. Bettendorf remains the top-ranked team at 25-1, Ankeny continued in second-place at 24-2.
West will compete in the Westside Volleyball Invitational hosted by Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Saturday, Oct. 12, and returns to the home court Tuesday, Oct. 15, to face Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the last regular season home match.
