North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– Tuesday, Feb. 4, is election day for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District.
Voters will be asked to authorize the district to issue $48 million in general obligation bonds for a number of construction projects including a new elementary school and expansion of the current middle school in Tiffin.
The district has identified a site at U.S. Highway 6 and Jasper Avenue for the elementary, and architectural/engineering firm Shive-Hattery has begun designing the facility, which would be based on North Bend Elementary in North Liberty. Design work is also in progress for the middle school expansion so that bids for both projects could be let within weeks of passage of the bond issue, with construction to begin as soon as weather and ground conditions allow.
CCA has experienced significant growth in recent years, leading to a halt to open enrollment and utilizing improvised classroom spaces at North Bend Elementary, which opened in 2008. Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford is also closed to open enrollment and is facing crowded conditions. District representatives indicate the middle school will be facing overcrowding as the waves of students in the elementary schools converge, necessitating the expansion and remodeling. Those students will eventually reach high school, and plans are in the works for expansion to accommodate them as well.
To pass, the bond referendum must receive at least 60 percent of the vote.
The official ballot states:
“Shall the Board of Directors of the Clear Creek Amana Community School District in the Counties of Iowa and Johnson, State of Iowa, be authorized to contract indebtedness and issue General Obligation Bonds in an amount not to exceed $48,000,000 to provide funds to build, furnish, and equip a new elementary building, including site acquisition and site improvements; to build, furnish, and equip additions to and improve, replace, remodel, repair, furnish, and equip the existing middle school, including the HVAC and electrical systems; to improve and replace the HVAC system at Amana Elementary; and to build, furnish, and equip additions to the high school and related remodeling, improvements and repairs?”
Polls open in the five precincts of the school district at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m., with a satellite voting site (for early voting) set up Friday, Jan. 31, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the high school in Tiffin, concurrent with a high school basketball game.
